چکیده

This article explores the relationship between dense molecular cores and young, pre-main sequence stars within the active star-forming giant molecular cloud ρ Ophiuchus. Our analyses synthesize multiwavelength data, including dust extinction maps, dust emission at 1.2mm, mid-infrared images, and molecular line emission from several species. Following the investigation of various dense core identification algorithms including a new technique based on Bayesian statistics our final sample of dense cores is determined from a hybrid of techniques applied to the 1.2mm dust emission map. The spatial distribution of these cores, measured with the two-point correlation function, appears scale free over two orders of magnitude in separation, mimicking the spatial distribution of young stars in this range. The measured velocity dispersion of high volume density gas in a subset of cores implies that a vast majority are stable against gravitational collapse. The systematically smaller average column densities measured for the larger cores and evidence for substructure in the high resolution dust maps suggest that some of the larger cores may fragment into multiple star systems. Approximately 6 cores harbor multiple embedded sources and new mid-infrared sources are found within 8 cores previously thought to be “starless.” Additionally, nine 1.2mm sources identified as cores are marginally resolved or unresolved sources coincident with known young stars and are likely to be heavily contaminated by circumstellar disk emission. In light of these results and the known high multiplicity of young stars, we find it unlikely that cores identified through dust emission or extinction have a one-to-one mapping with the subsequent generation of stars arising from them. To understand the similarities between ensembles of dense cores and the stellar initial mass function will require in depth studies that consider the distribution of dust, molecular line emission, and deep near and mid-infrared imaging from nearby active regions such as ρ Ophiuchus. Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The initial conditions of star formation VIII: an observational study of the Ophiuchus cloud L1688 and implications for the prestellar core mass function

We re-analyse all of the archive observations of the Ophiuchus dark cloud L1688 that were carried out with the submillimetre common-user bolometer array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). For the first time we put together all of the data that were taken of this cloud at different times to make a deeper map at 850μm than has ever previously been published. Using this new, deep...

The initial conditions of star formation in the Ophiuchus main cloud: Kinematics of the protocluster condensations

Context. The earliest phases of clustered star formation and the origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) are currently much debated. In one school of thought the IMF of embedded clusters is entirely determined by turbulent fragmentation at the prestellar stage of star formation, while in a major alternative view it results from dynamical interactions and competitive accretion at the p...

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
